Lake Elsinore was originally called Laguna Grande by Spanish explorers. The city that grew around it was established on April 9, 1888, and named by its founder after Helsingør, Denmark, the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet. The lake itself, approximately 2,993 acres at normal water levels with a maximum depth of 42 feet, is the largest natural freshwater lake in Southern California and has supported recreational use and residential settlement throughout its modern history.

The lake's water levels have fluctuated dramatically—from near-desiccation in the 1930s and 1950s to major flooding in 1980, and more recently to a 25-year high of 1,248 feet in February 2024 after a series of winter storms. To maintain stable levels and support the residential community that surrounds it, a multimillion-dollar water management project keeps the lake navigable year-round, and an aeration system installed in 2007 helps prevent ecological fish kills. The combination of reliable water supply and recreational opportunity has made the lake the centerpiece of a city that has grown from a small resort community into a suburban center.

For families in Lake Elsinore, the lake is part of the landscape where they build their lives—a place where children learn to fish, where neighbors gather, and where the cycles of seasons are marked by water levels and weather. Planning for those families means thinking about the years when they will be raising children and establishing their home in this community, which is exactly when a life insurance policy becomes most important.
