Health classes explained

Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard—what each label stands for and how people shift between them.

Pricing for term life relies on rate class categories at each company. While specific terminology varies by insurer, the standard sequence follows this pattern: Preferred Plus (also termed Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, with table ratings for above-standard-risk applicants. Tobacco use places applicants in separate classes with correspondingly higher rates.

What underwriters look at

Height, weight, blood lipids and pressure, family medical history, medical history, lifestyle.

How to use the quote tool

When you describe your health, choose honestly: Excellent means Preferred Plus rates, Very Good points toward Preferred, Good suggests Standard Plus and Average lands on Standard. Your quotes will reflect this class; the carrier validates it during their review. Unsure of your class? Get quotes for two levels and review both, letting the application determine your actual standing. Selecting a higher class optimistically won't reduce your final premium—it only makes your estimate less realistic.
